These reflections are a result of more than 40 years of ministry as a Roman Catholic priest. Most of these years I spent in the Diocese of Charlotte which covers Western North Carolina. Now I am retired, and live in Medellín, Colombia where I continue to serve as a priest in the Archdiocese of Medellín.

Beloved, we love God because he first loved us.  If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen  cannot love God whom he has not seen.  This is the commandment we have from him: Whoever loves God must also love his brother. (1 Jn 4:19-5:4)

We are constantly being reminded of our hypocrisy. To say I love God is a cinch as long as I’m allowed to hate others. Perhaps, one day our eyes will be open to see clearly through the lies we tell others as well as the ones we tell ourselves.
