These reflections are a result of more than 40 years of ministry as a Roman Catholic priest. Most of these years I spent in the Diocese of Charlotte which covers Western North Carolina. Now I am retired, and live in Medellín, Colombia where I continue to serve as a priest in the Archdiocese of Medellín.

Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 33)
R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.
Blessed the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he has chosen for his own inheritance. From heaven the LORD looks down; he sees all mankind.
R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.

Nationalism parading as Biblical faith is contrary to the teaching of the church. There is a reason that in the creed (the profession of faith) we say the “catholic” church. Catholic means universal, for all peoples of all times. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us: All are called to belong to the new People of God (CCC 831).
