These reflections are a result of more than 40 years of ministry as a Roman Catholic priest. Most of these years I spent in the Diocese of Charlotte which covers Western North Carolina. Now I am retired, and live in Medellín, Colombia where I continue to serve as a priest in the Archdiocese of Medellín.

Therefore, that I might not become too elated,
a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan,
to beat me, to keep me from being too elated.
Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me,
but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you,
for power is made perfect in weakness.”
I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses,
for when I am weak, then I am strong.
(2 Cor 12:1-10)

Saint Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” has been the subject of much speculation. What it was really makes no difference. That he was content to endure all things for the sake of Christ says it all. As Saint Paul observes: “When I am weak, then I am strong.”
